James married Mary J. McDonald in Tennessee. Their sons, James A. and John W. were born in Tennessee before they moved to Denton County, TX by 1870. James was always a farmer.
He fought for the Union in the Civil War in the Tennessee Regiment 2, Company B, Cavalry. He was wounded in 1869. He died at age 43, leaving his wife and two sons.
