Alfred Richard Johnson was born in Kerkhoven the son of Andrew and Carrie Johnson. He graduated from the University of Illinois School of Pharmacy. Al was the owner/operator of the Johnson Rexall Drug from 1937 until retiring in 1979. He was one of the leading businessmen in Detroit Lakes for many years.
Al was elected to the Detroit Lakes City Council as second ward alderman in 1949 and he served until 1953. He served as mayor of Detorit Lakes from 1959 to 1965. Al was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church where he served as a church trustee and as a grand knight of Holy Rosary Council No. 3166, Knights of Columbus. Al also was a longtime member of the Detroit Lakes Kiwanis Club and had served as president of the Detroit Lakes chamber of Commerce.
Al married Esther Louise Bovy in Little Falls on September 5, 1921. They had 7 children.
