Born in Hanover, Germany, Catherine married Konrad Graper there in c.1815. In 1838, she traveled with her Husband and Children from Hanover to Bremen, then up the River Weser to the North Sea, then across the Atlantic on the ship "Brig Johannes" to America, arriving at the port of New York in November, 1838. From there, the family took passage on the steamboat "Atlas" to Albany, N.Y. then traveled to Schenectady by rail. From there, they headed to Buffalo by canal-boat. However, there was an outbreak of Cholera, with several deaths on the boat, and the Captain and Crew abandoned the boat at Rochester, saying to the seven Immigrant families on board that 'they must do the best they could' for themselves. After staying in Rochester for several days, the remaining families resumed their journey and arrived in Buffalo, N.Y. Traveling then by boat to Toledo, Ohio, the families started overland for Cincinnati, stopping to rest for a few days in Defiance, Ohio. Konrad decided to settle in Defiance, and the other families moved on. After Konrad's death, her oldest sons helped support Catherine.
