The oldest son of Martin Brown and Belinda Seay Brown. Martin Brown's father was a revolutionary war soldier. Belinda Seay Brown was of Huguenot descent. Both parents were Methodists. After being educated locally, he entered Washington College in 1840. He then attended the University of Virginia.He joined the baptist church and was ordained in 1845. Dr. Brown was a powerful preacher ranking with the best of his time. His sermons were clear, forceful, logical and covincing. He taught and delighted his hearers and his members were devoted to him. As a speaker he was always in demand and had few equals. With all his gifts he was a humble and unassuming man. His powerful speeches were a potent factor at demoninational gatherings. He served as chaplain to Carter's Battalion of Artillery in the Confederate army. He spent most of his life teaching school. Among the insitutions that benefitted from his efforts were Hollins,and Richmond College. He was a remarkable teacher with a wide reputation for his encylopedic knowledge,intelectual powers and profound scholarship. He could speak ten languages including Greek, Latin, Hebrew and German. It was said he could teach any course at the college. He was popular with the students and the community, when he lectured there were no empty seats. He married Sallie H. Wimbush in 1851 and together they had eight children. He died at his home. The service was at Grace Street Baptist Church and conducted by Professor H.H.Harris and Dr.C.F.James. The trustees,faculty and students attended the funeral as a body.
