Born into the influential family that ran the Richmond Times Dispatch, his parents were John Stewart and Anne Eliza Tennant Bryan, his grandparents, Joseph and Belle Bryan. D.Tennant Bryan was the leader of the Richmond press for more than fifty years. In World War Two he served as a Lt. Commander in the Pacific for the U.S. Navy. In addition to publishing two papers, he was president of the American Newspaper Publishers Association, a director of the Associated Press, head of the Virginia Associated Press Newspapers, a director of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association and a trustee of the Washington Journalism Association.He formed and was chairman of Media General and expanded into cable television and other businesses. He was elected to the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame and the Virginia Business Hall of Fame. He was a trustee and president of the Virginia Historical Society. He donated the site of his ancestoral estate for Richmond Memorial Hospital in 1949. He married Mary Harkness Davidson on May 11-1932. They had two daughters and one son.
