The son of Robert Gamble Cabell and Margaret Caskie Cabell. His paternal grandfather, William H. Cabell, was a Governor of Virginia. He was attending Richmond College when he expressed the desire to enlist in a volunteer company. His father persuaded him to prepare for it at V.M.I. as a 16 year old in 1862.
He served as First Sergeant in Company D of the Corps of Cadets during the Battle of New Market. He was killed there.
General F. H. Smith, Superintendent of the Institute, wrote to the cadet's father, "Cadet William H. Cabell fell in the gallant discharge of his duty"
