James Richard Carson, 78, of Huntington, WV, husband of Clarissa Harless Carson, died Monday, January 7, 2008 at St. Mary's Medical Center. Mr. Carson was born November 13, 1929 in St. Mary's Hospital, the only child of Arthur David Carson and Mary Emogene Booton Carson, both of whom preceded him in death.

He was a 1947 graduate of Huntington High School and earned both his undergraduate degree and Master of Science in Chemistry degree from Marshall University. A U.S. Army Veteran, he served in the 101st. Airborne's Screaming Eagles from 1952-1954. He was a 35-year employee of International Nickel Company, where he was a Senior Chemist. In 1982, Mr. Carson was selected as a Fellow in Great Britain's Royal Society of Chemistry, and was elected Chairman of the International Standards Organization, traveling worldwide to set universal metallurgical standards. He retired in 1987 and spent many years of his retirement tutoring students in Math and Science at Beverly Hills Middle School. Mr. Carson was an active member of his church, from his childhood at the Baptist Temple to First United Methodist Church where he was currently serving as Lay Leader. Throughout the years, he touched the lives of many youth and adults teaching Sunday School.

In addition to his wife of nearly 57 years, he is survived by two sons and two daughters:
Richard Stephen Carson (Linda Ann) of Summerville, SC; Paul Kelly Carson of Huntington;
Joanna Jean "Jodi" Carson of Lexington, KY;
Jill Carson Shaffer (Sam) of Tarpon Springs, FL. Additional survivors include his
five grandchildren: Jenny Linn Beckelhymer (Jason) of Mount Juliet, TN; Joseph Paul Carson and Christopher Todd Carson of Summerville, SC; Samuel Carson Shaffer and Jacob Riley Shaffer of Tarpon Springs, FL;
a great grandson, Carson Reese Beckelhymer of Mount Juliet, TN.
Also surviving are several special nephews, nieces, and cousins; including one very special niece, Linda Gill Messinger of Richmond Hill, GA.

Service was at First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Paul Russell and Dr. Lander Beal Officiating. Entombment in Woodmere Memorial Park, Abbey of Remembrance South Garden of Faith.
