Melissa Peterson, 22, of Snowflake, a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Jan. 21, 200 in an automobile accident in Morehead City, N. C., where she was serving. A truck struck the back of the car in which she was riding. The car had stopped for the passing of a funeral cortege.
Born Feb. 23, 1977 in Holbrook, she lived in Snowflake all her life. She graduated from Snowflake High School in 1995. While in high school she was involved in many activities including orchestra, cross-country, track and cheerleading for the wrestling team.
She grew up loving to dance. After high school, she participated as a contestant in the 1995 Miss Navajo County Pageant. As a finalist, she was third runner up. She attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho for two years. There she received an Associate Degree in Health Science. She was also a member of the Clogging Team.
In September 1998 she began serving a mission in the North Carolina Raleigh Mission. Over the past 16 months, she touched the lives of many people as she shared the gospel. She participated in the open house held recently at the new Temple in Raleigh. Her most noted qualities were her cheerfulness, positive attitude and love for her family and all people. She was loved, and will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her parents, Fred and Elise Peterson of Snowflake; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Angela and Mike Willis of Snowflake, Mindi and Courtney Peterson of Snowflake; one brother and sister-in-law, Cameron and Brandi Peterson of Taylor; grandparents Theo and Imogene Peterson of Snowflake; and one niece, Maren Willis.
Funeral services were held Jan. 27, at the Snowflake Main Street Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Kim Lewis officiating. Elder Rex D. Pinegar of the Seventy presided and spoke at her funeral. There was a viewing prior to the services. Burial was in the Snowflake Cemetery. Her parents, Fred and Elise Peterson, plan to travel to North Carolina on March 24, her planned release date, to meet with members and non-members who were acquainted with their daughter.
