Amy Jade Winehouse
Birth: Sep. 14, 1983
Southgate
Greater London, England
Death: Jul. 23, 2011
Camden Town
Greater London, England

Grammy Award-Winning Singer. One of the more successful and artistically influental vocalists of her generation, she was to see her life clouded by personal problems. Raised in London, she evidenced her musical talent early and at 10 began a four year stay at the Earnshaw Theatre School; Amy moved on to the Sylvia Young Theatre School but soon found herself expelled for rules violations. Having started her own rap ensemble called Sweet 'n' Sour at 10 and received her first guitar at 13, she refined her style and skills and in 2003 released the jazz-themed album "Frank". Major success with the BRIT-nominated record did not spare Amy a succession of drug and legal difficulties which impaired her singing and songwriting effectiveness. With time she moved away from jazz into a style reminescent of the girl groups from earlier generations; in late 2006 Amy produced "Back to Black" which contained the hits "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab" and proved a mega best seller on both sides of the Atlantic. In all she was to garner five Grammy Awards and a 2007 BRIT Award for Best Female Performer but her self destructive cycle continued with public performances often marked by bizarre stage behavior. Amy was to endure multiple scandals, arrests, stays in drug rehab facilities, broken romantic relationships, and legal complications until her sudden death in her London apartment. For all her ups and downs Amy had continued singing, contributing a cover of Lesley Gore's "It's My Party" to Quincy Jones' 2010 "Q Soul Bossa" and cutting duets with Tony Bennett which were pending release at her demise.
