"Uncle Carl Tousley contributed a great deal to the history of Alaska with his wonderful talent with photography and his storytelling skills.
"Carl was in the Army and was stationed in Kansas, Texas, and, I believe, in Wyoming and Montana. Then he was a member of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey; sent to Alaska to survey the territory, only a possession of the United States since 1884, a matter of 28 years!
"I have some of his photo albums which contain photos of Eskimo 3 hole Bidarkas, pack trains, and old and odd characters. Photos taken before the Alaskan Cataclysm which now is known as, "The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes." Carl had surveyed and photographed that valley before the volcanic upheaval! What an event to have seen happen and a "before and after," photograpic record! I have been considering sending the albums to the Alaska Historical Society, but, due to procrastination, I have neglected to do so. Also, I wonder if they would treat this great historical treasure with proper respect and utilization. Would they even realize what it means to Alaska? Of course, it is worth nothing stored in my closet!" Nov 5, 1995 by Elwin Ragsdale. Note: Uncle Carl's photographs and mementos were in fact given to the State of Alaska.
