The son of Joseph S. & Susannah (Truman) Matchett, the family arrived in America ca. 1852. In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Catasauqua, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The family surname is also found spelled "Matchette."

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Catasauqua June 30 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Reading, Berks County, July 2 as a private with Co. B, 38th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 7, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Philadelphia February 16, 1864, and mustered into federal service there February 24 as a private with Co. E, 186th Pennsylvania Infantry. He is listed as in arrest at muster-out but was discharged by special order to date August 21, 1865, six days later than the rest of his company. No general court-martial record was found.

He married Mary E. Sheesley or Berger (both reported in children's death certificates - two Marys?) and fathered Marion (b. @1868), Gertrude S. (b. 03/10/72), Irene (b. 08/10/75), Bertha (b. 11/07/75), Vincent George (b. 01/19/79), Arthur Richard (b. 03/13/80), Ellen R. (b. 02/??/83), Walter Wesley (b. 01/19/88), and Ida C. (b. 01/??/90). In 1880, he was living with his family in Bethlehem, Northampton County, but died in Steelton, Dauphin County, where he had been a member of Lascomb Post No. 351, G.A.R.
