Birth: Apr. 9, 1838
Death: May 19, 1928

Elizabeth Finley Laird was born Between April 9 - November 4, 1838 in Baker Co., Georgia. She was the daughter of Elisha and Nancy Finley. She married James M. Laird August 1857 in Geneva, Geneva Co.,Alabama. She applied for and received a Florida Widow's pension of $120.00 per year based on her husband's Civil War service. This was verified by the following newspaper listing and also a list of pensioners at the Florida State Archive Internet site.

"Walton County Pensioners (Pensions & Widow's Pensions for CW - From DeFuniak Springs Newspapers) published at the request of Gov. Gilchrist, and shows the amounts paid from October 1st 1909 to March 1st 1911.
3698 Elizabeth Laird 120.00"

After James Laird's death, Elizabeth Finley Laird, could not make payment on their farm in Gum Creek, FL and someone name Adams bought the note on the farm. Sometime between 1910 & 1920 they moved to Euchee-Anna, Walton Co, FL and purchased land for another farm (80 acres). At that time there was a log cabin on the property. By 1920 Lewis Edward had built a farmhouse and had married Mical R. Howell. Lewis Edward had also built a small home or they used the log cabin on his property for his grandmother & two aunts, Nancy and Wealthy.

At her death, Elizabeth Finley Laird was living in the small home with her daughter, Nancy and her sister, Wealthy, on the farm property of her grandson, Lewis Edward Laird. Elizabeth's great grandchildren remember going down a lane from the barn to her house.

Elizabeth Finley Laird died May 19, 1928 and is buried at the Gum Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Glendale, Walton Co., Florida. [Gum Creek Baptist Church (Inactive)County HWY 183B (Located East of Glendale) DeFuniak Springs, Fl. 32433] Her grandson, Charles Jefferson Laird, "C.J." remembered his great grandmother, Elizabeth, dying in his arms. He was 14 years old and she was 90.
