Howard W. Lee, county clerk, died at 2:30 this afternoon at Mercy hospital.
Mr. Lee suffered a relapse at Mercy hospital and his condition was regarded as critical all day. Hospital authorities on Monday declared that there was little hope that Mr. Lee would survive the present illness. Members of the family were called to the hospital early Monday morning. The county clerk was first confined to his home with an attack of grip and, when complications threatened to develop, was taken to the hospital last week. He was 76 years old on Jan. 14.
He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. H. B. Mosely, Beloit, wife of Representative Mosely from the southern Rock county district, Mrs. Harriet Pierson, Edgerton, and five sons, Robert Lee, Seattle, Wash.; Frank Lee, county engineer; John Lee, Phelps Lee, Janesville; and Allen Lee, La Prairie township.
Howard Lee has been county clerk for 23 years.
