In 1844 he earned his Medical Degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. On 13 December 1847, he was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the U.S. Army during the war with Mexico. He served with distinction as the Medical Officer of the Mounted Dragoons. In 1850, he was Surgeon at Columbia Barracks, Clark County, Oregon Territory. On 21 August 1856, he married Maria McGregor Campbell. He served the U.S. Surgeon General's Office in Washington D.C. On 25 April 1861, he resigned from the U.S. Army to serve a hospital in Richmond, Virginia. On 12 July 1861, he temporarily became Surgeon General of the Confederate States Army, being relieved by Samuel Preston Moore. He served as Surgeon until 1863, when he was appointed Assistant Surgeon General of the CSA. After the War, he practiced in Richmond. He was on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Penitentiary and attended the 1875 reunion of the Confederate States Army Medical Organization in Richmond.
