Private - Company C - VMI Cadet at the Battle of Newmarket.

Second son of George Littleton Upshur and Sarah Andrews Parker Upshur. He attended Norfolk Military Academy before going to V.M.I., where he graduated with honors. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Newmarket. He attended the Medical Department of the University of Virginia and the Medical College of Virginia, from where he received the degree of M.D. in 1868. In 1869 he began practice in Richmond. In 1882 he was Professor of Practice of Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. He was eminent in the medical world and a well known contributor to medical journals. A thirty-second degree Mason and vestryman of St. James Protestant Episcopal Church. He was on the board of visitors at V.M.I. and surgeon general of the Virginia Division of the United Confederate Veterans.
