Goldman Benton was the son of Robert Carden and his second wife, Elizabeth Robards. On 22 December 1835 in Grainger County, Tennessee, he married Rosannah Monroe. They had the following children in order of birth: Elihue Pettibone, John Armstrong, William Goldman (Golden), Mahala Jane, Ancel Levi, Matilda Adeline, James Monroe, Joseph Allen, Winna, and Leroy Lea.
