-- Mr. William Henry Belk, Jr., 85, of Charlotte, died Sunday, September 16, 2001 at home.

A memorial service for Mr. Belk will be held at 11:00 a.m. today in the Harry and Bryant Chapel, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. The Reverend Dr. Carl W. Dumford of Third Presbyterian Church, formerly of Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Mr. Belk was born in Charlotte on June 29, 1916, the eldest son of the late William Henry Belk and Mary Irwin Belk. His father was the founder of the Belk department store organization based in Charlotte. Mr. Belk was the former president, and a stockholder and director of the Belk store corporations. He also served as a director of the former American Trust Company in Charlotte, predecessor of the Bank of America Corporation.

Mr. Belk was a graduate of Central High School in Charlotte, attended Davidson College for two years, and was graduated from Duke University. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in Naval Intelligence from 1942 until 1945, attaining the rank of Lieutenant, j.g. At the end of the war, Mr. Belk returned to the government, all of his paychecks uncashed, with a note stating simply, `It was an honor to serve my country.` Following his graduation from college, he joined Belk Stores. Upon the death of his father in 1952, he became President and was instrumental in the establishment of a buying service for all Belk stores.

The Belk buying office was initially located on the fifth floor of the former Belk store in downtown Charlotte, and in 1949 was moved to a new facility on East Fifth Street. The buying service was expanded to include numerous other store services, and later became Belk Store Service, Inc. which eventually served more than 300 stores throughout the Southeast. Mr. Belk maintained a personal interest in and a compassion for, all Belk employees. During his service to the company, he established a profit sharing fund for Belk employees and added other benefit plans such as medical insurance and merchandise discounts.

Mr. Belk was a friend of Dr. Norman Vincent Peal, who during a visit to Charlotte once commented that Mr. Belk was "one of the most knowledgeable men on religion that I know." Mr. Belk maintained a large library of books on the world's various religions.

Survivors include his son, William Henry Belk, III and his wife, Diane, of Waxhaw, NC; his brothers, John M. Belk and Irwin Belk, of Charlotte, and Henderson Belk, of Cramerton, NC; and his sister, Mrs. Sarah Belk Gambrell, of Charlotte. A daughter, Mary Henry Belk, and a brother, Thomas M. Belk, predeceased him.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Harry and Bryant Company is serving the family of Mr. Belk.
