Lifelong Alaskan Fenton Henry Dennis Jr., 69, died Dec. 1, 2004, at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in Sitka.
He was born Sept. 27, 1935, in Juneau to Virginia and Fenton Dennis Sr. He lived in Sitka beginning in 1946 and attended Sitka schools and Sheldon Jackson Junior College. He also attended college in Alma, Okla. He was a proud member of the state's 1954 championship high school basketball team. Mr. Dennis served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959. He became a certified public accountant and worked at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital for 15 years and for Alaska Pulp Corp. for 10 years. He had also worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Juneau and Sealaska Timber. Mr. Dennis retired to Anchorage in about 1993. He was a member of American Legion Post 13 in Sitka. He was an enrolled citizen of Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indians of Alaska and the Sitka Tribe of Alaska. He was a shareholder of Sealaska Corp. and Shee Atika Inc. and had served on the Shee Atika Inc. board. Known for his love of sports, Mr. Dennis enjoyed bowling and being a basketball referee. He was proud of a 300 game he bowled in Sitka. He was a referee with the Sitka Referees Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing the trumpet and saxophone.
Mr. Dennis is survived by his children, Virginia Burger and Jeff Dennis; and grandchildren, Amanda and Zachary Dennis, all of Michigan; mother and stepfather, Virginia and Walter Moy of Sitka; brother, Gary Moy Sr. of Sitka; sister, Marjorie Hamre of Montana; sister-in-law, Dorothy Dennis of Skagway; uncle, Ike Cropley of Juneau; aunts, May Cropley and Kathy Dennis of Juneau; goddaughter, Charity Goddard-Smith; and many other family members and friends.
