Deceased Name: ANGELINE M. CARLSON, A MARINE IN WWII SEPT. 22, 1920 -- DEC. 5, 2004

Angeline M. Carlson of Cheektowaga, who was among the first local women to enlist in the U.S. Marines during World War II, died Sunday in St. Joseph Hospital, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. She was 84.

Born Angeline Josefiak in Buffalo, she graduated from Lafayette High School and Bryant & Stratton Business Institute.

She attended Marine boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., and served as a first sergeant in the Women's Reserve of the U.S. Marines, which handled a number of administrative functions for the Marines during World War II.

From 1943 to 1945, Mrs. Carlson was secretary to the captain of the women's Marines contingent at the naval base in Norman, Okla. She also was court secretary there.

After leaving the military, she worked in New York City before returning to Buffalo. She worked as a banquet manager at the Sheraton Hotel on Delaware Avenue in the 1950s before becoming executive secretary at the General Motors Training Center in Clarence.

She left work in 1961, when she married Gordon Carlson, who survives.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Calvary Baptist Church, 410 French Road, Depew. Inurnment will be in Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown.
