Birth: unknown
Death: Apr. 4, 1865

Served as a Marine in the Confederate States Navy. Died of disease as a POW.

William Browne (often spelled Brown) was a Confederate States Marine Corps Private. He served with Company C onboard the C.S.S. Arctic, he also served onboard the C.S.S. Raleigh. The C.S.S. Arctic was intentional sunk in the Cape Fear River channel on December 28, 1864 to create an obstruction for the protection of Wilmington, North Carolina. Although it is not entirely clear, it is like that he was taken prisoner with the fall of Fort Fisher in January 1865, and like many of the Confederates captured there was transferred to the Elmira Prison Camp.
