John W. Davis Sr. was born on 19 March 1755, in Wales. He was the son of John Davis (1729 Wales - 1765 at sea) and Hannah Cornell (1733 Wales - 1765 at sea). He married Margaret H. Barton in 1783. They were the parents of eight children. He immigrated to Virginia in 1765 and lived in Zanesville, Muskingum Co., Ohio in 1820. He registered for military service in 1780. He died on 18 March 1834, in Highland Township, Muskingum Co., Ohio, at the age of 78, and was buried in Bloomfield, Muskingum Co., Ohio.
Both of his parents died in 1765. at sea, when sailing to Virginia from Wales.
