Grandson of Dr. James Carmichael, son of Dr. George F. Carmichael and
brother of Dr. Spotswood Wellford Carmichael, all of Fredericksburg, Va.

Company C "Gordon Rifles" of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County, 30th
Virginis Infantry, Corse's Brigade, Pickett's Division, 1st Corps, Army
of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Fredericksburg VA.; clerk.
Enlisted on 5/23/1861 as a Private, he mustered into "C" Co. VA 30th
Infantry.
Elected 1st Lieut 12/2/1861.
Hospitalized 8/1862 with jaundice.
Company C Commander much of 1864.
Hospitalized 1/-3/1865 Danville, VA with dyspepsia and malaria.

Postwar, married to Lucy A. and sharing the still-standing "Carmichael
House" at 309 Hanover Street, Fredericksburg, Va. with his brother
Spotswood, he was a bookkeeper for the National Bank of Fredericksburg.
His papers are at the Virginia State Library, consisting mostly of
wartime letters from his mother in Danville, Va. (bio by Paula Lucy Delosh and Big French)
