Edgar J. Hanvey was the first Collinsville boy to volunteer during WWI, and died at the Baptist Hosptial in St. Louis of pneumonia.

The son of Robert and Margaret, he had been employed by the Glascow Electrical Company in the purchasing department. He enlisted at the age of 16 at the Base Hospital Unit No. 21 which was organized by the Red Cross at Washington University and which was among the first of the American forces to reach France. he had run away from home to enlist and had served twenty-three months in France as a stretcher-bearer and hospital attendant.

Pvt. Hanvey was survived by his parents, five brothers and one sister.
