According to his enlistment papers, he was a blacksmith born in Bremerhaven, Hanover in about 1814, or was aged 47 at the time he enlisted at St. Louis, Missouri on 20 Oct 1861 with Co. L (and later B, 2nd MO Light Artillery. He was mustered in on 05 Nov 1861.
His service papers indicate he was at the Marine Hospital in January of 1862 and transferred from Co. B Light Artillery, to Co. A Light artillery according to Gen. Halleck's orders. He was later at the hospital in Rolla, Missori in May of 1863 and in private residence in June.
He was mustered out at Benton Barracks, Missouri 24 Aug 1863.
