Private in Co. G. 125th Pa. Infantry. Died in the hospital in Frederick, Md., of wounds received at the Battle of Antietam on 17 Sept. 1862. Husband of Caroline Berkey. Father of Samuel and David Long (both d. in infancy) and of Susan Jane Long Penrose and Sarah Elizabeth Long Zeigler Kuhn.

Funeral notation by Pastor Daniel Shindler of the Hollidaysburg Lutheran Church:

"The deceased was a soldier in the army of the Potomac. He served his country faithfully - poured out his life on the alter. Was wounded (I believe) at the battle of Fredericksburg, Va. and died in the hospital at Frederic City, Md."


From the Hollidaysburg Democratic Standard, 28 April 1863:

"FUNERAL of A SOLDIER - On last Thursday the remains of James Long, of Allegheny township, this county, a member of the 125th Regiment, P.V., were brought home for interment. He died of wounds received at the battle of Antietam, at the General Hospital, Frederick city, Md., on the 5th of February last. His remains were interred in the Dunkard graveyard, Allegheny township, on Friday. He was a gallant soldier, and leaves a wife and two chidren to mourn his loss."
