Born in Frankstown, Blair Co., Pa., one of six children of Isaac and Isabella (Ramage) Hershberger. After his father's death in 1854 he was apprenticed as a carpenter and helped to support his mother and two crippled brothers. Learned the trade of plasterer from his uncle David Hershberger in Dauphin Co., and at the start of the Civil War he joined Co. G 55 Pa. Infantry out of that county. Discharged in the spring of 1864 and returned to Frankstown to visit his family. Re-enlisted and was killed at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff (VA), 16 May 1864. Beloved brother of Wilson and William Hershberger, Mary Ling, Emma Smith and Martha Cartwright.
