Major League Baseball Player. A native of Richmond, California, he was a right handed pitcher who played 13 seasons of Major League baseball. Drafted by the Houston Astros in the eighth round of the 1976 draft out of San Diego State University, he made his major league debut on April 11, 1980 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. One of the National League's better relievers during the 1980s, he had 6 straight seasons of at least 23 saves or more between 1985 and 1990, with a career high of 33 in 1986, the year the Astros won their second National League Western Division Pennant. In the subsequent National League Championship Series against the Eastern Division champion New York Mets, Smith gave up Lenny Dykstra's game winning homer in Game 3, and the Astros were eventually defeated by new York in six games. After the 1990 season he became a free agent and signed with the Chicago Cubs, with whom he spent his last two seasons. After his playing career, he served as the San Diego Padres pitching coach, a position he held from 1999 to 2001. Over the course of his career, Smith accrued a 53-53 record and a 2.16 ERA with 216 saves in 609 major league games. He was named as a member to the National League All-Star team in 1986 and 1990. He died from a heart attack at his Carmel Valley, California home at the age of 53. (bio by: Frank Russo)
