Ichabod HENKLE built the first sawmill of this immediate locality on Rock Creek in 1853 or 1854 and sawed lumber for many important buildings in Corvallis and Philomath. Among these were Philomath College and some of the early building of Oregon State College. Ichabod was married to first wife Mary King on January 20,1831 in Fayette County, Ohio. They had six children. He married second time to Elizabeth Conger on April 28, 1852 at Centerville Appanoose County, Iowa. They were parents of six children Ichabod Henkle pioneer settler of Ohio and Iowa Territory came to Benton County Oregon in 1853. He was a prominent farmer in the Pleasant Valley District on the south fork of Mary,s river southwest of Philomath, Oregon. He cleared immediately a larger part of his 320 acre land claim on which a sawmill was established in this enterprise he was assisted by his brother Jacob Henkle Jr. and Andrew Jackson Henkle and also by his brother-in-law David King. Ichabod Henkle was one of the incorporators of the Corvallis and Yaquina Bay Wagon Road Comany and helped to construct the toll section of this road which was later purchased by the Willamette Valley and Coast Railroad Company. Ichabod Henkle was one of the counselors for his father Jacob Henkle, Sr., head of the wagon train that crossed the plains to Benton County, Oregon in 1853 and may properly be considered as alternating with his brothers Jacob Henkle, Jr,.and Andrew Jackson Henkle, and his brother-in-law David King as acting Captain of the train for a part of the journey.
