Born Lee County, Iowa---Jeremiah married first wife September 21,1873 Philomath, Benton County, Oregon to Elizabeth Ann Mason, she was born August 31,1854 Benton County, Oregon died August 9,1876 Benton County Oregon. they had one son Otis Clair Henkle. His second wife was Nancy A Hunt. She was born February 18,1859 in Polk County, Iowa died March 4, 1948 at Philomath, Oregon they had two children. Jeremiah (Jerry) Henkle had a long and eventful life from early pioneer days in Oregon Territory to a busy thriving commonwealth of mid 20th century. As a youth of 19 years he joined his father Ichabod Henkle in exploring a right-of-way from Corvallis to Yaquina Bay though virgin territory. The "Oregon and Yaquina Bay Wagon Road" was incorporated, Jerry Henkle enlisted in the Civil War, joining Company A 1st Oregon Volunteers at Corvallis in 1864. Mustered out July 20,1866 at Fort Yamhill,Oregon, He was stationed at Fort Vancouver then in Washington Territary. After the close of the war he settled in Philomath, where he rounded out his long useful life. In 1872 he bought an interest in the General Merchandise Store of John L Shipley who had acquired the business of Reverend T,J. Connar. Upon the death in 1877 the store was operated under the name of J.E. Henkle and Company Mr Henkle operated the store until 1891. At the time of his death he was the oldest member of the Western Henkle Association and was its Honorary President.
