Rafael Hirsch Brand, of Waynesboro, died peacefully at his home, Wednesday, December 9, 2009.
He was born April 14, 1923, in Berlin, Germany, a child of Bracha and Yechiel Brand.
He escaped Nazi Germany emigrating to Palestine and then to the United States, where he enlisted in the United States Army. He survived the fighting at Anzio and returned to the United States. He trained as an Engineer at Pennsylvania State University where he met his wife, Shirley Ruttenberg Brand. Married for 58 years, they made their home in Waynesboro, where he worked for Dupont in Benger Laboratories, as they raised their family.
He was a pious man who attended services regularly at Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville and Temple House of Israel in Staunton. After his retirement he traveled with his wife, supported charities, and enjoyed his grandchildren.
His beloved sons, Sim Brand and Elan Brand, preceded him in death.
His wife Shirley and his son Asher survive him as do his three grandchildren. Also surviving him are his daughter in law Laura; and his sisters Judy Schwarz and Zahava Velder.
His funeral was held Thursday, December 10, 2009, at the Temple House of Israel Cemetery, located on North Augusta Street, between Woodland Drive and Lee Street in Staunton.
