US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from 1967 to 1970 as a representative from Ohio's 24th Congressional District, and from 1987 to 1990 as a representative from Ohio's 8th Congressional District. From 1971 to 1986 he served as a member of the Ohio State Senate. A graduate of Ohio State University, he served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1960 where he rose to the rank of captain. In 1970 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Ohio governor, losing the Republican nomination. In 1989 he was convicted and sentenced to 30 days in jail, charged with sexual misconduct involving a 16 year old girl. He was indicted several years later on charges of conspiracy and bribery, accused of accepting money in exchange for votes, which resulted in a 30 month prison sentence. Faced with an impending House Ethics Committee investigation, he resigned his Congressional seat in October 1990, three months before his term was set to expire.
