"Old Pioneer Days"
Written by Flora Sage, May 1938

"My parents moved to Kansas when I was 15. At the end of 3 years I married. My husband, his aunt, my brothers and I went West to hunt Buffalo.

"One morning we sighted a large herd -- it was a grand sight, as far as the eye could see was a moving mass of them. The men soon got all the meat and hides we could haul. That night we fought Prairie fire -- us girls took off our heavy petticoats and helped the men -- as there weren't enuf sacks.

"When we got home there was a crowd of men just about to go to look for us as they heard the Indians were on the War Path. We saw quite a lot of Indians but they were Hunters. We also saw several bunches of Wild Horses they were sure beautiful."

Married Martin Ira Sage, September 5, 1876 in Alexander, Rush Co., KS.

This beloved Grandma lived only 86 years, 8 months, 22 days and died before I was born.

My Daddy spoke highly of her and said he wished we all could have known her. He said some of the stories that she told of her growing up and early marriage years were to roll on the floor laughably good. She must have had quite a spirit in her and I'm sorry I never got the opportunity to know her.

Many thanks to Arlie "Bud" Jordan for stone photo.
