United States Navy Admiral. He entered the US Navy as a midshipman, in February 1838 and rose through the ranks to be commissioned Ensign in 1850. In 1853, he became a Lieutenant and commanded the steamer USS Ottawa of the South Atlantic blockading squadron. During Civil War, he was commissioned a Commander and was on special duty in command of the steamer USS Mahaska in the South Atlantic blockading squadron, which was engaged in the bombardment of Forts Wagner and Gregg in August 1863. After the war he was promoted Captian in 1868 and served as the South Atlantic blockading squadron commander. He was appointed Commodore, in 1874 and served as Commandant of the Norfolk Navy Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia, until 1879. In 1883, he retired from active service with the rank of Rear Admiral. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
