Edward Ferrero
Birth: Jan. 18, 1831
Death: Dec. 11, 1899

Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Grenada Spain, before the Civil War, he conducted a dancing school and taught dancing at the US Military academy. At the beginning of the war he was Lieutenant Colonel of the 11th New York militia regiment. In 1861, he raised the 51st New York Regiment, called the "Shepard rifles" and at Roanoke Island, his regiment took the first fortified redoubt captured in the war. He commanded a brigade in the Virginia Campaign at the Battles of South Mountain, Antietam and for bravery, was appointed Brigadier General in September 1862. In 1863, he commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 9th Army Corps, at Fredericksburg, Vicksburg and at the Siege of Knoxville. In 1864, he was in command Fort Sanders at the Battle of Bean's Station and commanded the colored division of the 9th Corps at the Siege of Petersburg. For outstanding service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers in December 1864 and mustered out of the Army in August 1865. After the war, he went on to be one of the leading dance instructors and ballroom operators in America. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
