We regret very much to announce the death of our venerable and esteemed friend, Mr. N. L. Blakemore, at his home and that of his son, Mr. David Blakemore and family, at Tenth Legion, Va., Tuesday evening, December 7, 1897. He called to see us last week, in returning from the New Market depot, with a load of goods, and on Friday he wrote a letter - his last - to Mr. E. L. Zirkle, of New Market, requesting among other things, that he send a sack of flour to Rev. R. M. Wheeler, of this place, such acts of kindness being one of the characteristics of Mr. Blakemore. Mr. B. had been active up to Saturday afternoon, when there was a general breaking down of his constitution, and he became unconscious. Relatives were summoned, and his son, Mr. T. M. Blakemore, of Washington, D. C., arrived Monday night, but his father was unable to recognize him.

Mr. Blakemore was born in Page county, where he married Miss Nancy Foster, of that county, who died about one year after their marriage. He then married Miss Jane Philips, of Augusta county, Va., with whom he happily lived for fifty-four years, and who (now over seventy years of age,) with two sons T. M. and David Blakemore and one daughter Mrs. Mollie Crist, of Sangersville, Va., and other relatives survive him. Having engaged in the mercantile business at Sangersville, Augusta county, in the iron and lumber business in Page county - boating it for many years to Harper's Ferry - and in the commission of business in Washington, assisting his son in a store at Tenth Legion, (to which place he moved from Page county about eight years ago,) serving as a magistrate in Rockingham county, and writing for local newspapers, he was widely and favorably known. Though in the eighty-first year of his age, Mr. B. was full of life, energy, and good spirits, and will be greatly missed.

In charge of Undertaker E. R. Bowan, accompanied by W. H. Arehart, of this place, followed by relaives and friends, his remains were taken to Sangersville for interment, Rev. W. L. Dolly, Bridgewater, officiating at the funeral - services having been held early Wednesday morning at his home by Rev. R. M. Wheeler, of the Methodist church of which Mr. B. was a consistent member.

Mr. Blakemore was active in politics, and was a sterling democrat, and knew personally the old "wheel horses" of Democracy of this State, whom he delighted to hear.
