Marshall came from Kentucky to settle in Davidson County. He was 5'10,"black hair, dark eye and tan complexion. He fought in the Seminole Wars (6 months with Co 2 Regiment Trousdale's Tennessee Mounted Militia) as well as the Civil War. Some of his land (at least 160 acres) was acquired as a bounty for his service in the Semiole Wars.

He married the Mary Jane Vanderville, the daughter of a prominent Judge in the Davidson County area. Their marriage was solumnized by Rev Thomas Fuqua...Mary Jane'e uncle. They had 14 children. ( 3 died as children: James, Sally and Ephraim "Doc" per family records)

His epitaph: He Obeyed the Commands of his Maker.

He was originally buried in the Peal cemetery (his son-in-law Stokely Peal was living in Marshall's first home and that is where the family burying ground was located). In 1966 the Army Corps of Engineers re-interred his grave to section N at Mt Juliet Memorial Gardens.
