Charles and brothers John and Silas all from Switzerland County, Indiana, served in various Indiana unit during the War. Charles and John mustered in on August 22, 1861. Charles acted as a calvary scout in early 1862 in Maryland. While scouting there he was caught in a snowstorm and became seriously ill. He was discharged due to this medical illness on April 20, 1862.

He re-enlisted in the 115th Infantry, Company E from July 30, 1863 to February 25, 1864. He died on May 5, 1864 due to a pulmonary disease (consumption or pneumonia). He is buried next to his brother John in Eugene Cemetery, Eugene, Vermillion County, Indiana.
