James Edward Holland, 85, son of George F. and Mary DeWalt Holland, was born Oct. 4, 1919, at Huntington, Pa. He died Jan. 30, 2005.
He retired in 1986 as professor emeritus from the School of Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Earlier, he was superintendent in Arkansas and Missouri communities including Galena, Naylor and at Houston from 1954-'62.
He earned degrees from Juniata College in 1941, the University of Arkansas in 1948 and UMC in 1966.
He served in the U.S. Army in Europe in the signal corps beginning in 1941 and remained an officer in the Army Reserves until his retirement as a major in 1965. While serving as an Army instruction at Camp Crowder at Neosho, he married Delaine Shamblin July 15, 1944. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year.
Mr. Holland was an active member of the Missouri United Methodist Church throughout his life in Columbia.
Surviving are his wife of the home in Columbia; daughters, Marilynn Cary and Barbara Holland; two sisters, Ella Bingham and Mary Van Ormer; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services are 10 o'clock Saturday at Ozark Memorial Park in Branson.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity or the Missouri United Methodist Church.
