Civil War Papers state: William was made a 2nd Lieutenant.
He was honorably dischared at Knoxville Tn. on 23 June 1865.
He served with his brother Thomas Jefferson Hicks in the same company, same regiment. Also served with sister Margaret's husband, George Washington Jackson, all three from Walker Co. Ga.

His widow Susie Ann Hicks applied for his widow's pension.

The complet papers of his service show that he was married before Susie to Margaret Lawrence who died: 11Aug.1873, and married second to Matilda M. Thomas on: 27Sept.1874 and Matilda died: 6 Dec.1903

William served in Company E of the 10th Regiment of the Tenn. Infantry Union Army.
