Motion Picture Director. He was one of the most successful film directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. From 1920 to 1952, he made more than 50 films and was nominated for six Academy Awards. He discovered actress Greta Garbo and also is credited with advancing the early careers of Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, Jimmy Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor. Some of his best credits include "The Eagle" (1925), "Navy Blues" (1929), "Anna Christi" (1930), "National Velvet" (1944), "The Yearling" (1946) and "It's a Big Country" (1951). He died of natural causes at age 97. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
