A Civil War veteran, he is son of Simon Bartlett and Susan Van Patten Van Patten. He is the younger brother of Harmon Van Patten who also moved to Illinois two years before Abram in 1859. His brother John stayed in Montgomery County, NY and has many descendants. His father Simon moved to Illinois in 1871 without his wife and died in 1875.
