JAMES MERRITT was the third child born to THOMAS W. and MARTHA "PATSY" ROWLAND MERRITT. James was born 01 Oct 1823 and died 20 May 1904 all in Greensboro, Greene County, GA. He is buried at Walkers United Methodist Church Cemetery in Greensboro.

On 13 August 1843, at the age of 19, he married his first wife HARRIETT ANN MARIAH FLEETWOOD. She was the daughter of WILLIAM FLEETWOOD and MARIAH (BYRD) BIRD. Harriett was born about 1827 and died before 1861. She was only 34 years old. Harriett Ann and James Merritt had six(6) children.

On 12 December 1861, James married his second wife SARAH "SALLY" SIDWELL.

They had eight(8) children. SOURCE: Larry Moon.

In March 1862, during the War Of Northern Aggression, James MERRITT joined Company K, 44th Regiment, Georgia. In March 1863, he was in Company "G" 66th Georgia. James was discharged in 1865 in Greensboro, GA. He was wounded in the hand, face, lip and nose.
Official Records state the following:
Merritt, James -- private in Co. K 44th Regiment Ga. Inf., March 1, 1862. In Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, Richmond, Va., July 8, 1862 Discharged, disability, February 24, 1863. Enlisted as a private in Co. G, 66th Regiment, Georgia Inf., August 15, 1863. Wounded July 20, 1864, near Atlanta, Ga. Died in Receiving and Distributing Hospital, Atlanta, Ga.; of gunshot wound July 25, 1864.

Obviously, he didn't die, but it's easy to make such mistakes in the middle of a war.

James MERRITT and 2nd wife Sarah "Sally" SIDWELL are my husband's great-great-grandparents.
