Norbert was the fifth child of John and Gertrude Backes of rural Foxholm. He spent time in a Minot hospital for a heart ailment, but doctors could do nothing more for him so he was sent home where he died very peacefully, just three days after his 17th birthday.

His youngest sister (a Catholic nun at age 96 in 2010) related to me that the family had all gathered around him, crying. Norbert told the family, "Don't cry for me. I am going to go to heaven." She also commented that "he had such a nice peaceful death."

Norbert Backes, 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Backes, of Muskego township, died on June 24th after a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held June 27th at St. Henry's church in Muskego township, and the body was laid to rest in the church cemetery nearby. Funeral services were conducted by Father Willenbring, of Melrose, Minn., a brother of the boy's mother. The death of this boy is a great loss to his parents, and they have the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement.

Dearest child,
thou hast left us
And thy loss
we deeply feel.
Tis the lord that
hast bereft us
of one we loved
so well.
