Robert L. Thurman, 64, of rural Slater died Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Fitzgibbon Hospital in Marshall.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Slater, with Rev. Bob Stewart officiating. Bethany Weiker, organist, will play "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace." Burial will be held in Mount Horeb Cemetery in Slater. Pallbearers will be Marcus Thurman, Joe Thurman, J.D. Thurman, Mike Root, John Best and Rick Pond. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Kiso and Jeremy Kiso. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Fitzgibbon-Mary Montgomery Hospice or Union Baptist Church Building fund in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.
Born July 30, 1943, in Fayette, he was the son of the late Harold R. Thurman and Viola Korte Thurman Heislen, who survives of Marshall. On June 19, 1965, in Arrow Rock, he married Barbara Sue Gibbons, who survives of the home. He was a member of Gilliam Baptist Church. He worked for many years as a truck driver and mechanic. He was currently a hog/swine farmer.
Additional survivors include one son, Harold Thurman and his wife, Julie, of rural Slater; one daughter Marylou Driskell and her husband, Clark, of rural Marshall; one stepson, John Harris of Marshall; three grandsons, Sidney Thurman, Grant Driskell and Tyler Driskell; two step-grandchildren, B.J. Sullivan and Alicia Spence; one step-great-granddaughter, Taylor Sullivan; three brothers, Paul Thurman of Columbia and Jimmy Thurman and David Thurman, both of Marshall; one sister, Janet Carmack of Boonesboro; and a half-brother, Gilbert Heislen of Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ed Heislen.
