Nina N. Powell, age 86, of Warsaw, passed away Monday, January 1, 2007, at The Bluffs Care Center in Columbia, Missouri. She was born on January 27, 1920, in Benton County, Missouri, the daughter of Harley and Sallie Cochran Hubbs. She grew up near Warsaw and graduated from Warsaw High School in 1937. She then attended one year at Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar and taught school at Fargo School in Benton County.
On April 23, 1938, she was united in marriage to Clarence Powell at Warrensburg, Missouri. Most of their married life was spent west of Warsaw at their home in Benton County with the exception of 2 years from 1975 until 1977 when they lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Nina was first and foremost a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. For a few years, she worked outside the home at the Purina Feed Store owned by Harold Holley in Warsaw and later for Drake's Dry Goods Store. She was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church of Warsaw, a long-time member of the Stepping Stones Garden Club of Warsaw, the Benton County Master Gardeners, and a life-time member of the Federated Garden Club of Missouri, Inc. Nina enjoyed flower arranging and won many awards at the Mo. State Fair for her exhibits. She was a member of the Benton County Extension Club and a 4-H leader for many years. She was instrumental in getting the Boonslick Library in Warsaw, served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and served a number of years as the Democratic committeewoman for Tom Township in Benton County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, on March 16, 1996, one brother, Elvin Hubbs, an sister, Heida Martin, a great-grandson, Henry Michael Powell, a daughter-in-law, Raydene Powell and a son-in-law, Ted Morris. Surviving are four sons, Mack Powell, and wife, Viola, of Lincoln, Jack Powell of Cole Camp, Joe Powell, and wife, Pat, of Rocheport, Missouri, Ralph Powell and wife, Diana, of Warsaw, one daughter, Jane Telander, and husband, Randy, of Columbia, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, and 8 step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Clayton Hubbs of Amhurst, Massachusetts, and Jack Hubbs, of Warrensburg, a sister, Freda Ranspot of Springfield, Mo., numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Nina Powell will be at 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 5, 2007, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Warsaw, with Rev. Bill Hix officiating. Graveside Services & Interment will be in National Cemetery near Warsaw. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 P.M., Thursday evening at the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw. Memorials may be made to the National Cemetery or The Bluffs Maple Unit for Alzheimer's Patients in care of the Reser Funeral Home, Warsaw.
