Youngest Alaska Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty
Ignatius John Charlie is the youngest police officer slain in the line of duty in Alaska. He was only age 20.
Family History
Ignatius John Charlie was born on May 29, 1964 in San Francisco, California. This was only two months after the March 27th earthquake in Alaska that occurred March 27th, Good Friday, at 5:36 pm, claiming 131 lives including 12 struck by the ensuing tsunami in California.

Ignatius John Charlie attended elementary school and high school at Alakanuk, Alaska.
Hired as a Police Officer
Ignatius John Charlie was hired by the Alakanuk Police Department around June 1984. Officer Charlie wore the police uniform and badge with a great deal of pride.
The Call
On Friday morning around 2:00 AM, May 10, 1985, Officer Charlie was on routine patrol when he found a suspicious snow machine on a road in Alakanuk. When Officer Charlie stopped to investigate, he found two men hiding in the bushes. He ordered the two men to step out onto the road. Officer Charlie did not not know that the two men had burglarized a business and stolen some firearms. One of the men opened fire with a .357 pistol, striking and killing Officer Charlie.
