Gary was an orphan and his childhood was spent living in the Children's Home in Covington, KY. He is remembered for how nice and kind he was to all of the younger children.
On 29 March 1969, Corporal Gary Lee Hisle was serving with M Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.
On that day, Cpl Hisle sustained severe fragmentation wounds from an explosive device and died of his wounds in a hospital in Da Nang on 23 May 1969.
