Sheba came to me unexpectedly when I was given the opportunity to give her a forever home after she was rescued from an abusive home. I'd never had a dog, and dogs were strictly prohibited on my apartment lease. But there was something about this young Cocker Spaniel......we were meant for each other.

Sheba's heart was full of love and devotion, even though the emotional scars of her abuse never completely healed. She was Woman's Best Friend, a much better friend to me than I to her. Life with Sheba was seldom dull.

Shortly after I brought her home, she had a run-in with a skunk when my 10 year old son took her out for her final potty break of the day. My son came tearing into the apartment hollering that Sheba'd been sprayed by a skunk. I was in the bedroom, and asked Abe where Sheba was....he told me she was rubbing herself all over the living room furniture! OMG! Well, I found out that tomato juice really DOES work! On dogs, at any rate.

Sheba was a dog of many talents. She could scarf down two corn dogs (momentarily left unsupervised) in the blink of an eye, leaving the sticks neatly in place! At picnics she could snatch a chicken wing off a paper plate at a dead run.

We faced many tough times together, and as time marched on, my selfish fear grew about the day she would go to The Rainbow Bridge. I couldn't imagine life without her. It was all about me! Would I find her at home, already gone? My ultimate fear was having to help her head Home with a vet's assistance. I couldn't imagine myself strong enough to do that.

For a long time she seemed immortal. But after she turned 17, she began to decline. She developed "Doggie Alzheimer's", and began to lose weight. My fear turned into compassion as I realized it was time for me to show her the unconditional devotion she'd always shown me.

Her hind legs weakened, and at potty-time I carried her outside and held her up so she could go. The mischievous spark in her big brown eyes began to fade. One day I looked at her, and the spark was gone. I knew that her soul had flown to Rainbow Bridge, and it was time to free her body. The decision was an easy one, and I needn't have feared it.

I honor her memory. Sheba is racing like the wind through cow pastures with her new buddies. I hope the cows don't mind!

~~Many thanks to purple lady for sponsoring my "Girlie-Girl". Such kindness is truly rare~~Mitch

Thank you also to every compassionate heart who leaves a little something for her here.
