ANNIVERSARY OF J.R. WALLER DEATH

Native of Swaledale
Robert Waller was born in Swaledale, July 5, 1794, and when twenty-seven years of age came to the United States. He assisted in the construction of the Erie canal, and a few years after its completion moved to Mineral Point, Missouri, where, in 1831 he married Maria Haigh. They became residents of Dubuque in 1832, before the state of Iowa had even a territorial existence, it being then a part of the territory of Wisconsin. Soon after their arrival, Mr. Waller became prominently identified with the lead industry. He was civil engineer and operated the first successful lead smelting furnace in Iowa. He was also actively interested in promoting many of Dubuque's early enterprises. Success attended his efforts, and at his death on March 17th, 1859, he was reported to be one of the wealthiest men of the state. He was survived by his widow and four children - Frances A., who became the wife of William Coates; Alice, who married Colonel Calvin Roberts, and some years after his death, James Woodward; Mary Jane, the wife of John Spensley and John R. Waller. Mrs. Waller was killed in the tornado at Mineral Point, Wis., in 1878, while attending a family reunion, At the time of his death, a brief biography of Robert Waller was sent to the editor of one of the Dubuque newspapers containing the following: "His fortune was freely lent, and at moderate interest, to honest worth and industry; and to the assistance he afforded them at the commencement of their careers, many of our best citizens owe their present positions of independence. *** He was of rare simplicity, of few words, direct and truthful, quick to appreciate honesty in others and carrying religion into all his dealings, and a firm, helping friend to those who had acquired his confidence.

Robert's father was William Waller b. 03 Oct 1770 in England and d. 28 Feb 1807 in Highwhiteside, Swalesdale, Yorkshire, England (buried St. Andrew's Churchyard, Grinton, Yorkshire, Swaledale, England but no gravestone)
