Corey Joseph Hayes
Birth: Jan. 2, 1987, Canada
Death: Mar. 20, 2009, Afghanistan

Trooper, The Royal Canadian Dragoons based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 22, he was from Ripples, New Brunswick. He was deployed as a member of the Reconnaissance Squadron, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group serving with NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and Tpr Jack Bouthillier were killed, and three soldiers were wounded, when their armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device during a patrol in the Shah Wali Kot District approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Kandahar City. The incident happened about two hours after two soldiers died and five were injured by a roadside bomb in Zhari district.

Tpr Hayes was described as a dedicated soldier and remembered "not only as a friend and comrade in arms but a brother who inspired them to stand up in the face of danger and do what was right". He liked to ride all-terrain vehicles, play hockey, skateboard and participate in most extreme sports. He was due to return home within a few weeks.

Corey is survived by his mother and stepfather, Donna and Bert Beek; father Joe Hayes; brothers Robert, James and Patrick Beek and Craig and Kyle Moretto; sister Bethany Hayes; grandparents and large extended family.

Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous)

Military funeral held at St. Luke's Chapel, CFB Gagetown, on Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Prior to the service, Tpr Hayes' casket, escorted by two Coyote armoured vehicles, traveled approximately 50 km from Minto Memorial High School past the family home in Ripples to the military base.

The deaths bring to 116 the number of Canadian military fatalities in the Afghanistan conflict since 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.

In November 2010 the Government of Manitoba announced that a lake in the northern part of the province has been named Corey Hayes Lake to honour the sacrifice of this fallen soldier.
